How To Dress In America

In comparison to the rest of the world, Americans tend to be more casual. You usually just dress for the weather. Customs for appropriate attire vary by region too. In Los Angelas and New York City, people are more formal than they are in the mid-sized, more laid back cities like Houston and Kansas City.

Most restaurants allow for any type of address, provided you have a shirt of some sort and shoes (sandals and flip flops are ok). Fancy restaurants may require a more formal dress code. Some may require formal shoes, others may require a collared shirt or pants, and some may even require a jacket. This depends on the city. You will likely see more dress codes in a city like Los Angelas than Houston once again.

Generally, bars (pubs) are okay with casual attire. However, clubs require a dress code, much like their European counterparts. The dress code is enforced more for men than women. Generally, clubs expect men to have a nice shirt, nice shoes, and pants (jeans are ok). Of course, with the economy the way it is, who knows when clubs will start relaxing their dress requirements!

Also, one thing you will notice is that Americans tend to have more loose fitting clothes in general. This is because your average American is larger (i.e. heavier) compared to the rest of the world. This does not mean you need to dress loosely; it is more of a reflection on the size of the average American.
